A thermocouple is a temperature sensing device that is used as a safety component to control the gas flow in gas water heaters. Thermocouples are attached to both the pilot light in the boiler and the shut off valve for the natural gas, the thermocouple will signal to the gas valve to stay open when the gas is lit. If the pilot light fails then the thermocouple will automatically close the gas off to prevent flooding the chamber with unburned gas, which prevents fire hazard risks and explosions.
